SHOP ONLINE ||| LOS OLIVOS relationship coffee

Sustainability is of utmost importance to La Prima Espresso and we have demonstrated this by becoming a certified fair-trade and certified organic roaster. Thanks to help from Andeano Coffee cooperative, which is a collection of Colombian coffee farmers, we are taking the idea of sustainability and fair-trade one step further by buying this year’s entire crop from the Los Olivos farm. We are very pleased to be the only roaster in the world who can bring you this coffee!

What is Relationship Coffee?

Relationship coffee is the term used to describe when one roaster buys an entire crop of coffee from a farm. This enables the farmers to receive a better than fair-trade price for their coffee by eliminating the need for coffee brokers or other middlemen.

What is the Los Olivos farm?

The Los Olivos farm is a nearly 100 acre farm in the Tolima area of Colombia (west central Colombia). It is owned by don Florindo and doña Fabiola who have been working their land for years; don Florindo manages the day-to-day workings of the farm and doña Fabiola manages quality control, cupping, and personnel management. The farm is 1600 meters above sea level, thus producing one of Colombia’s finest Arabica beans.

With the help from La Prima, Los Olivos is hoping to be able to construct composting pits and earthworm beds for composting coffee pulp.

Due to the success of the farm over the past several years, don Florindo and doña Fabiola have donated a parcel of land back to the community for the construction of a school as well as sanitary facilities to service the farm’s workers and their families. The farm produces approximately 60 bags of coffee per year, or roughly 4600 pounds.

What does the coffee taste like?

It has a sweet fragrance, medium, round body, a subtle but tart brightness, and a quick, clean finish with a nice lingering aftertaste. Perfect for a morning pick-me-up.
