News & Events

First Saturday of Every Month -- Come down to our Smallman Street location and take a look at our operation! We are hosting a roaster tour and coffee class where you can learn how to buy coffee, how to store it, and the best way to brew. Learn about different coffee types, the basics about espresso, organic coffee as well as fair trade. You will even get to see a roast first-hand. Our roaster will show you the step-by-step process from green beans to a batch of perfectly roasted coffee.

The cost is $10.00 which includes coffee sampling, a half-pound bag of a special blend of coffee and biscotti. Please allow 2 hours for the program. Space is limited. For more information and to reserve your spot, call the roaster at 412-565-7070.

January 2008 -- The January issue of Pittsburgh Magazine features an article on coffee and how it has evolved from a standard cup of whatever-you-find-in-the-grocery-store to an artistic endeavor. In the article, our owner, Sam Patti, gives advice on at-home coffee tasting and provides three coffee recommendations to get you started -- our own Colombian, our fair-trade and organic Ethiopia Harrar, and our fair-trade and organic Sumatra. All ar available at our coffee bar on 21st Street in the Strip District or online by clicking here.

Check out Pittsburgh Magazine's January 2008 issue for more information and photos of our roasters, as well as shots of Phil, our roast master, in action.

December 26, 2007 -- Pittsburgh Post Gazette's food writer China Millman's favorites of the city include La Prima's cappuccino! China joins many other Pittsburghers who love to sit outside our 21st Street cafe and sip on a cappuccino recalling times in sunny Italy.

December 3, 2007 -- La Prima's Matt Gebis., who manages our bar on 21st Street in the Strip District, participated in a barista competition last night at Aldo's Coffee in Mt. Lebanon. Matt competed in, and WON, both of the two competitions, The Gauntlet (making 4 drinks on 4 different machines in 4 minutes) and the Latte Art Throwdown. Click here to see photos from the event, read about other participants, and see official results.

Congratulations, Matt G!!!

October 8, 2007 -- La Prima gets a favorable mention in Carnegie Mellon University's student newspaper, The Tartan, as being the only retailer on campus who exclusively serves fair-trade coffee. The article encourages students to request more fairly traded goods at on campus retail outlets.

September 27, 2007 -- Our own Reynaldo De La Rosa was featured in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette's food section. The article talks about Cuban food, how Ray got his start in the kitchen, and how he made it from Cuba to the United States in the early 1980's. Ray's mother, Veronica, is also featured.

September 17, 2007 -- The Tartan, Carnegie Mellon University's student newspaper, had a feature story about us! Hopefully some CMU students who know La Prima from our on-campus Wean Hall location will venture down to the Strip District to experience first-hand Pittsburgh's version of the Italian coffee shop.

July 18, 2007 -- La Prima has officially received organic certification from Pennsylvania Certified Organic. Through this certification we are also certified organic by the USDA. This distinction affects the way we store, handle, and roast our coffee. We are one of two coffee roasters in Pennsylvania to be awarded this certification and the only one in the Pittsburgh area.

Take a look at our broad selection of organic coffees (which are also fair-trade!) at our retail location in the Strip District and of course through this website. Our Carnegie Mellon University location in Wean Hall serves our fair trade and organic coffees exclusively.
